So the show is back again after a little Easter sojourn to places more relaxing , where the batteries have been recharged ready for the Autumn workload and release schedule madness. Grey Reverend marks the show’s return to the airwaves and fibre optic cables with a track from his excellent new album on Jason Swinscoe’s Motion Audio label, closely followed by the Webster Wraight Ensemble, the unlikely pairing of deep house don Charles Webster and orchestral composer Peter Wraight who are just about to release probably the best orchestral jazz albums of the year, OK it’s not a big market, but wait until you hear it. Grandbrothers then kept the deep musical vibes flowing and provided a glimpse into the eclectic world of the new Brownswood Bubblers Vol. 10 compilation before Teebs got all abstract and ripped apart and stitched back together Raffertie‘s “Rain” tune from his recent album.
Now Call Super is fast turning into one of our favourite techno producers with his decayed and twisted techno mutations and his new EP coming on Houndstooth is another winner. This led nicely to a new young Danish talent, Aebeloe, who is looking like one to watch. He’s got a great little EP coming out on Farver and it’s refreshing to see such a young head developing a distinctive style and daring to be a bit different. A soul double header then followed with the sweet throwback soul vibes of Frootful chased by the Emanative remix of Omar taking the singer into more cosmic soul realms.
Two tunes of African hip hop with a golden age then went back to back with another play for a track from the excellent Jazz P EP on Kongoloti before we had the pleasure of showcasing another tune from Simba and Milton Gulli‘s killer album of Tribe Called Quest tributes, with a Mozambique twist, which is out anytime now on BBE Records, just check it is all we can say – you’ll like it. J Dilla then sneaked his head into the playlist as the record label run by his estate, Pay Jay, releases some unreleased bits and pieces and “Diamonds” is a timely reminder of the mans skills and hip hop’s loss. We then had to drop a tune from the new Shigeto album which has been on repeat recently, killer beats with a cosmic jazz twist – deep. A little tribute to the recently departed George Duke ended the show courtesy of the King Britt remix of the slightly obscure Duke tune, “Tzania“, RIP George and thanks for all the great music.
